Installing the Code

There are two sets of code available;

  • Standard tracking code.
  • Magento tracking code, for Magento websites or where there may be a jquery conflict.

To install the code, click on the code to copy it to your clipboard, then insert the code in the HTML of the website you wish to track. The ideal place to insert the code is just before the </body> tag.

Wordpress

We recommend using the insert header/footer plugin for Wordpress, available here; https://wordpress.org/plugins/insert-headers-and-footers/. Once you have installed the plugin, place the code in the footer.

Checking the Code Works

Once you have installed the tracking code, you can confirm that it is working in three ways;

  • By going to the campaign > website > analytics page in Newlytics. Once you (or somebody else) has visited any page on the website you are tracking, you will be able to see data here.
  • Go to the website and open the developer console. When the Newlytics script starts up, it will output a confirmation message here.
  • If you are using a free Newlytics account, and you visit the website you are tracking, you will see a tag at the bottom left of every page.

Common Errors

The standard Newlytics script is a jquery based file. Some websites may encounter problems with the tracking if they have errors in their javascript or jquery. To find these errors, we recommend;

  • Opening the website and the developer console. Find errors output here, and work through them one by one to ensure that there are none left.

If you find that the website has no errors and the Newlytics script still does not work, you can try one of the following;

  • Include the most recent jquery script just before the Newlytics script.
  • Move the Newlytics script into the header to try and initialise it before other scripts.
  • Try out the Magento version of the script, which prevents conflicts with some code (such as prototype).
